What Will Mobile Phones Look Like in 2010?

Last week I met with Anssi Vanjoki, executive V-P of markets at Nokia, to discuss the state of both the Finnish company and the mobile industry overall. Since Nokia has been particularly good at defining the specifications and features of phones ahead of time, I asked Vanjoki what some of the common features one should expect to see in a top-end phone in 2010 were. Here’s a quick rundown of what he told me:

A high-quality (QVGA) screen with 16:9 horizontal mode capabilities
A high-quality camera with resolution of between 5 and 12 megapixels and the sharpness and quality of a standalone digital camera.
Touchscreen input along with a good QWERTY keyboard. (I’m pretty sure Apple would disagree.)
About 32-64 GB storage.
GPS and multiple radios that allow access to voice, 3G and Wi-Fi networks.
Most of these phones will come with services integrated into them, and many phones will be “solution-specific.” As an example, Vanjoki offered the soon-to-be-released Nokia N97 and forecast that by 2013, such feature-laden phones will be commonplace. I remember the Nokia N73 and N81 phones from three years ago. Indeed, their features — 3-megapixel camera, music playback and high-speed wireless access (3G or Wi-Fi) — are commonplace today. From that perspective, Vanjoki (and by extension, Nokia) might be right, though there remain two problems on the horizon: the continuing slump in the global economy, which is preventing people from spending big dollars on their phones, and the fact that Apple, not Nokia, now sets the phone trends, thanks to its super-hit device, the iPhone.

LG Mini Review

SINGAPORE, February 9, 2010 – LG Electronics (LG), a global leader and technology innovator in mobile communications, today announced its new LG Mini (LG GD880), a new phone that accentuates its trendsetting design with a full complement of intelligent features.

Expected to be available in Singapore in June, LG Mini will be the smallest and slimmest 3.2-inch full touchscreen phone on the market, making it the perfect handset for people who want all the communication features that today’s technology has to offer without the bulk and weight of a traditional fully-loaded handset.

“We developed the LG Mini in response to specific requests from consumers who were unhappy with current full touchscreen phones that are too bulky, too clunky and too expensive,” said Dr. Skott Ahn, President and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “The easily pocketable LG Mini delivers great looks at a reasonable price, along with the trendy features that people want.”

Thanks to a slim, compact form factor made from the highest quality materials, the LG Mini easily slides in a shirt pocket or small handbag while still feeling reassuringly solid to the touch. Textured metal accents on the sides of the LG Mini add to the phone’s eye-catching looks without detracting from its overall simplicity. On the front, a large 3.2 inch touchscreen with an aspect ration of 16:9 extends all the way to the edge of the phone, giving it a finish that is as smooth as ice. In addition, a button-free face keeps the LG Mini simple and sleek.

But the LG Mini has much more than just great looks. Besides a range of staple features such as speedy web browsing and fast push email, the LG Mini also includes several unique aspects, including Social Network Connect, which makes keeping in touch with online friends even easier than on a desktop PC. Popular social networks such as Facebook and Twitter are instantly accessible through built-in applications and a Social Network Feed provides instant and automatic updates of friends and family members on the home screen. Updates also appear next to each contact in the Social Address Book.

What’s more, the LG Mini boasts a 5.0 megapixel camera featuring advanced face detection which allows uploading of sharp, vivid pictures and videos wirelessly to multiple social networks in one simple step. The device also plays music and movies in several popular file formats and even includes an FM radio.

With HSDPA connectivity at 7.2 Mbps and Wi-Fi, the LG Mini can browse the internet at high speed and also provide real-time location information using A-GPS.

The LG Mini will be available in Europe starting in March, followed by other markets, including Singapore. Prices will vary country-to-country and will be announced separately in each market.

Nokia X6 16GB gets a price tag, now available

Now the Mystery is Solved:-

One thing we like in Nokia’s Mobile phone is that when Nokia announces a product they also mention its estimated price. Well, almost every time. They didn’t say a word on Nokia X6 16GB’s pricing so we had to guess ….. Now the mystery is solved.

We spotted the recently announced Nokia X6 16GB at Nokia’s online stores in the UK and in Germany. The phone is now available for preorder.

If you live in Germany, you can preorder you X6 16GB for 379 euro.

The guys in the UK are even luckier – they can get it for 299 pounds (that makes around 342 euro).

Let’s remind you what were the differences between the two X6 versions: while the Nokia X6 32GB comes with 32GB on-board memory, a subscription to the Nokia Comes With Music service and the fancy Nokia WH-500 headphones, the X6 16GB packs only 16GB of flash memory (there is still no memory card slot aboard) and comes with the cheaper WH-701 earphones and without the all-you-can-eat music service.

We expected the trimmed down version to cost a 100 euro less than the original Nokia X6. To our surprise the price difference turned out 200 euro. However, it is still unknown when exactly you will get this baby.
